2009 WC2 Bratislava  - [ Saturday, July 04, 2009 ]

The NZ senior team survived a gruelling 24 hour drive from Pau to Bratislava to face the likely chance of cancellation of the second world cup due to massive flooding.

The race is going ahead but training has been reduced to limited sessions which is tough for the kiwis who havent had much exposure to this course.

All info about the race available here...  read more

2009 WC1 Quals  - [ Sunday, June 28, 2009 ]
Tauranga's Canoe Slalom Olympian Luuka Jones has produced a stunning performance at the brand new Stade D'Eaux Vives Pau, white water centre in Pau, Southern France.
Posting a flat time of 109.25 with a 2 second penalty to finish in 10th place on 111.25.
With only 20 boats making it through to semis Jones was in a comfortable position of 6th after first runs. With a place in semis virtually guaranteed the pressure was off for her second run.
Her career best performance has been a 28th place at one of last years world cups.
After first runs Jones  said ' I can't believe it, this has never happened to me'
Jones who is in the kayak squad at Waiariki Institute of Technology has been training hard over the NZ summer and is thrilled that the hard yards are paying off.
Mike Dawson, was fast enough in first runs, in fact he would have been 7th, but a 50 second penalty, necking a gate, dashed his semis chances. Aaron Osborne outside the pace in run 1 needed something special in run two but ended up with a 50 also. Louise Jull also didn't do enough in this classy field to be racing tommorrow, although had an improved second run on this pushy course.
Some of the NZ junior team who were also competing at this World Cup, finished near the end of their respective classes. 'it is a huge step up, however they represented themselves well and benefitted hugely from the experience. It is tough to race in your first World Cup as a junior with all the hype of TV cameras and lining up by Olympic stars" says manager Sue Clarke. "It was all about experience for the juniors. They all did parts of the course well and there will be a huge long term benefit for them' she said.

After semis and finals (cut down to 10 boats)  tommorrow the NZ seniors face a gruelling 24 hour drive to be ready to race World Cup 2 at Bratislava next weekend, while the junior team has a training camp with a French coach before meeting up with their fellow compatriots in Augsberg, Germany for WC 3 on 10th July.

2009 Foix Semis  - [ Sunday, June 14, 2009 ]

The C2 crew of Ben Gibb and Bradyn Church squeaked into the semis in 10th place.

Posting a solid run without any major errors they had an anxious wait while they saw how the rest of the crews fared on the tricky course.  Lots of drama as the British crew had a popped deck and sunk. They looked like they had missed out until the top qualifiers from yesterday , Troquenet and Voyemant (FRA) rolled and their chances were over.

Luuka Jones didnt quite get the start she wanted and was off the pace, with an added 4 touches to finish in 14th.

Finals racing is live on the internet from 1pm-4pm French time ( 11pm NZ?)  Ben and Bradyn runs will be about 2.50am  http://team.sports.orange.fr/videos/orange-sports-tv/lives/index.php

2009 Junior Team in Merano  - [ Tuesday, June 09, 2009 ]

The kiwi juniors made a good start to their European racing.

Battling jet lag and the added pressure of adjusting to their new boats the junior canoe slalom team took a couple of runs down the course to post some respectable performances.  The senior ICF race on day 1 was tough with heavy rain almost flooding the course and the kiwi team didnt perform their best.
Day two, the sun was out and the river level had dropped and it was a different story for  the junior race  and the C2 combination of Bradyn Church and Ben Gibb took the junior title in two clean runs. " it was great to finally put two solid, error free runs together" says Gibb  ahead of the junior pre world champs event at Foix in France this weekend.
The rest of the team raced well too with Callum Gibb in 6th with a clean run also. The K1 mens class was much bigger class (28 entrants)  so his 6th was a good result and showed he has the class to compete with some of the best of the European juniors.
Shaun Travers finished 2nd in the C1  and Jane Nicholas who had struggled a bit the day before in the flooded conditions also had a clean run to finish 4th.
